What's the difference?
Vented Gas Log Systems
Vented gas logs must be operated with the damper completely open, in a fully functioning wood-burning fireplace. Vented gas logs produce some heat, however, they must be vented with significant portion of the heat going up the chimney, therefore they are NOT an efficient heat source.
Vent-Free Gas Log Systems
Vent Free gas logs are designed and manufactured to be operated in a wood burning fireplace, in good working order, with the damper closed or in a manufactured vent free firebox. With the damper closed all of the heat being produced by the logs stays in the room. Although these units do not require the damper to be open during operation, they may produce odors or air quality issues in some cases which can be harmful to humans, pets and plants.
Vented and vent-free log sets are not interchangeable. An old set of vented logs cannot be turned into vent free.
